THE derelict Severn Sands dredger has been dragged from its temporary home on the riverbank at Heanton Court and towed across the river to Yelland where it will finally be dismantled.

During high tides at 6pm last night (Thursday) in an operation overseen by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, the rusting hulk - which broke free from its original moorings at Fremington last month - was swiftly removed.

It was taken across the estuary to Yelland jetty where the plan is to remove all hazardous materials and clean it up before it is cut up and safely disposed of.

The operation was carried out by DRS Demolition from Cornwall, using the sand dredger Manning. The MCA Wales and West counter pollution and salvage officer Donald McDonald said the whole thing had gone exceptionally smoothly.
