INSTOW schoolgirl and film fan Dorothy McCormack experienced her own cinematic close up when Filmclub, the education charity and experts in film for young people, sent her to interview the stars of the new big screen adaptation of Gulliver’s Travels, which was released in UK cinemas on Boxing Day.
Dorothy, 10, is a member of Instow School’s Filmclub and a Young Ambassador for the nationwide initiative, interviewed two of the film’s stars Emily Blunt and Billy Connolly and director Rob Letterman.
Billy Connolly, who plays King Theodore, told Dorothy that if he was King, he would give children a day off school and no homework. He said her interview was “a real pleasureâ€
Emily, who plays Princess Mary, said: “It was my favourite interview of the day.â€
Dorothy said of her experience: “The interviews were fun. I was quite nervous before I went to do my first one, which was Emily Blunt, but I really enjoyed it and there was nothing to be worried about. Emily was really friendly and was interested in talking about us as well as herself. Billy Connolly was really funny. He asked where I came from and when I said “Devon†he started singing a song about Devon! I expected Rob Letterman to be quite serious, but he was actually really funny as well. You have to remember the director is just as big a star as the actors are.
“Being a Young Ambassador has been a brilliant experience so far. It gives me a good knowledge of films, because what most people think about a film is what they see on the screen. Now I can actually look into what happens in films and it’s really interesting and fun. It’s nice to see how normal the stars are…and to get to interview real people, who have an experience in acting or directing.â€
Filmclub, the nationwide education charity, offers access to thousands of popular and classic films from around the world for young people and teachers to watch and discuss in their school film clubs. The Young Ambassador scheme is designed to enable school children aged 8–18 years to take part in film industry events offering the youngsters unique access and insight into life behind the camera.
