BIDEFORD Blues old boy Gary Sawyer returned to where his football career began to officially open the new �260,000 astroturf pitch at the Blues and Appledore Junior Football Club training ground in Sandymere Road, Westward Ho! on Saturday.

Hundreds turned out to see the the Plymouth Argyle and Bristol City professional cut the ribbon as the culmination of years of effort to provide the state-of-the art facility.

The football club caters for nearly 300 aspiring youngsters between the ages of six and 16 years, offering training and competitions in a range of local leagues and competitions.

Funding was provided by the Football Foundation, the Friends of Bideford Blues and Appledore JFC, Torridge District Council, Bideford Town Council, Bideford Rotary Club and Bideford Round Table.
