Rugby star’s message to Torrington pupils

Joseph Bulmer

ENGLAND women’s Rugby Union star Jo Yapp, spent the morning with pupils from Great Torrington Community School yesterday (Tuesday), regaling the young people with stories of her journey to overcome personal issues and achieve sporting success.

Jo visited the school in her role as Athlete Mentor for Sky Sports Living for Sport, an initiative delivered in partnership with the Youth Sport Trust to harness the power of sport and encourage 11-16 year olds to be the best they can be across all areas of their lives.

After a question and answer session with Year 8 boys and team building activities, Jo guided the school’s gifted and talented athletes group, helping them to learn how to balance sporting commitments with school life.

Selected pupils had the opportunity to show Jo the activities they have been involved in, encouraging her to join in, and discussed what they get out of the sessions. Jo took the class through her own experiences of overcoming difficulty to excel in rugby and explained how the fundamental lessons a young person learns through sport can help them grow in other areas of their lives.

Schools seeking to learn more about how to become involved in Sky Sports Living for Sport are invited to register their school at http://livingforsport.skysports.com/.
