VETERAN powerlifter Ron Jewell of Landkey is a British champion.

He won the 100kg over-60s unequipped class at the British Drug Free Powerlifting Federation championships at Bournemouth University at the weekend, which attracted some 120 contestants.

Ron, 62, lifted 150kgs squat, 125kgs bench press and 210kgs deadlift to take the title in the Masters 5 class.

His bench press was a new South West record. He narrowly failed with an attempt at 130.5kgs, which would have set a new British record.

Ron qualified for the championships after sweeping the board in his class at the South West championships earlier this year.

He trains at the Phoenix Gym at Mill Road in Barnstaple.
