Late goal denies Bideford second spot but draw preserves unbeaten home run

A LATE equaliser denied Bideford the chance to go second in the Evo-Stik League Southern First and West Division on Saturday.

Visitors Pool Town equalised with seven minutes to go after the Robins twice took the lead before having to settle for a 2-2 draw.

Unbeaten at the Sports Ground in 11 league and cup games this season, Bideford took just 10 minutes to go in front when Matt Andrew played in Ben Wood.

Captain Michael Walker used his head to pull the Dolphins level on the half-hour mark as both sides contributed to an entertaining encounter with plenty of chances at both ends.

After the break, good pressure by striker Kevin Squire forced Sam Clarke to put the ball into his own net with 20 minutes to play

The hosts had the chance to wrap up the points with a close range effort five minutes later and were punished for not doing so as the visitors introduced a four-pronged kitchen-sink style attacking formation.

The gamble paid off, substitute Steve Smith beating Ollie Chenowith to salvage a point and end Bideford’s run of seven successive league and cup wins at the Sports Ground.

Bideford were set to play Abingdon United at home last night and will entertain North Leigh on Saturday. On Tuesday night, the Robins will travel to Cinderford Town.
