Robins go third with Devon derby win

BIDEFORD gained a 1-0 win in a rare Evo-Stik Southern League South and West Division One Devon derby at Tiverton on Monday night to move up to third place in the table.

Sean Downing scored the all-important goal on the hour in an evenly contested end-to-end game.

The win follows a draw at the Sports Ground on Saturday with Yate Town, thanks to a late penalty by Matt Hockley. The skipper held his nerve to put away the spot kick after the referee punished a handball two minutes from time.

Earlier, Matt Andrew had given Bideford the lead just five minutes into the match.

Jacob Cox equalised for Yate before half-time and Michael Meaker looked to have earned their first win of the season with a far post header with 10 minutes to play.

Midweek, Bideford had ended Mangotsfield United’s 16-game unbeaten away league record with a 2-1 win at the Sports Ground, Kevin Squire and Craig Herrod the scorers.

Bideford meet Tiverton again on Saturday, this time at home in the preliminary round of the FA Cup.
