RNLI on lookout for lifeguards

North Devon Gazette

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) has launched its search for budding new lifeguards to start their career on some of North Devon’s most popular beaches, as applications open for 2022.Â

Recruitment for this season’s team of RNLI beach lifesavers has opened nationally, ready for the summer season. As well as rescuing those in difficulty, the RNLI’s beach lifeguards promote safe behaviour so visitors can return home safely. Â

In 2020, the charity’s lifeguards responded to more than 10,687 incidents and helped just over 25,000 people, saving 110 lives. Successful applicants will receive world-class lifesaving training, enjoy good rates of pay and develop valuable skills for a future career.Â

Matt Whitley is the RNLI lifeguard Supervisor for North Devon and looking to recruit lifeguards into the existing team covering the beaches of Croyde, Woolacombe, Westward Ho! And Sandymere. Â

Matt said: “Lifeguarding is a really unique and rewarding role. You can gain some invaluable skills and training whilst working on the beach and being part of an incredible team. Â

“If you enjoy working in a challenging environment, have the ability to work under pressure and you like helping others, it really is a job you will love.’Â

Will Figes worked his first season on the North Devon beaches last summer and is keen to get back to work when patrols restart in April. He said: “It’s a great job. No two days are ever the same, on those busy days, you are thinking on your feet, constantly assessing the situation, making quick decisions and I love working as part of a team to keep everyone safe. Â

“You finish the day tired but it’s really rewarding and it’s great to have the opportunity to learn. My passion for lifeguarding and helping people has also influenced my career choice, I plan to go to university to study Paramedic Science and really look forward to getting started on the course and combining study with working on the beach.” Â
