Revenge win for the Robins

TWO second-half goals gave Bideford revenge for an early season defeat at the hands of Halesowen when they beat the visiting West Midlanders 2-0 at The Sports Ground on Saturday.

Goals by Matt Hockley and Jamie Mudge extended the Robins’ unbeaten league run to 17 matches and sees them now six points clear at the top of the Evo-Stik Division 1 South and West table and with a game in hand over second-placed Hungerford.

Bideford could have made a dream start when Ian Sampson fed the ball through to Sean Downing in the opening minute of the game, but the free-scoring winger this time put his shot over the top.

Halesowen posed a few problems themselves in the early stages, but were unable to significantly worry Bideford’s new keeper Paul Hider on his debut appearance.

The deadlock was broken after 55 minutes when a cross from Matt Andrew was handled by a defender and Hockley made no mistake from the penalty spot.

Shortly afterwards the visitors were reduced to 10 men following a sending off for a challenge on Downing.

Ironically, Halesowen then produced perhaps their best chance, drawing an outstanding save from Hider just two minutes from the end to keep the Robins in front.

Bideford immediately hit back with a counter attack, Kevin Squire breaking from the half-way line to set up Mudge for the tap-in to make the game safe.

Bideford were due to entertain Tiverton Town in the quarter-final of the Westinsure Devon FA St Lukes Bowl last night, Tuesday.

On Saturday they are back in league action away to Clevedon Town, who they beat 3-1 at home in October.
