NORTH Devon 2nd XI set a new fourth-wicket record of 249 at Instow in the drawn game with Cornwood.

Rob Ayre (105) and Richard Screech (123) came together at 46 batted through to the close at 295 for three.

The previous record of 211 had stood since 1998 when Ben Elphick and Paul Scott of Bovey Tracey took Sandford's bowlers to task.

Cornwood very nearly gave as good as they got on the chase, led by teenager Matt Kidd with an unbeaten 86.

A stand of 101 for the fourth wicket between Kidd and Dan Harris (58) made for an interesting finish.

Thirty to win off the final two overs proved a few too many and Cornwood ran out of time on 285 for seven. Ollie Hunt (3-71) was the pick of the North Devon bowlers.
