BARNSTAPLE boxer Jimmy Randall took another step up the ABA ladder with victory on Sunday in the senior Western Counties versus Home Counties Pre-Quarter finals at Plymouth.

His opponent was Liam Shinkwin of the Bushey ABC, an ex-professional and international boxer with schoolboy titles on his record.

Randall started quickly, landing the first scoring shots inside the first 30 seconds with two powerful lefts to the head. He moved well and tried to work his opponent out, attacking in bursts. During one of these attacks he sustained a small nick under the right eye, but this did not deter the barum fighter as he finished the round 8-4 up.

In round Randall started where he had left off, making his opponent miss and then countering with fast combinations that enabled him to move into a 16-9 lead.

The Bushey boxer come out strongly in the third, taking the fight to Randall, but he stayed composed. There was a nervous moment when the referee asked the doctor to look at the cut under Randall’s eye, but he was allowed to continue and ran out a 24-18 winner.

He now progresses to the quarter-finals in Great Yarmouth.
