Floats will be floating on the Taw at carnival with a difference

UMBERLEIGH is set to revisit a lost village tradition when it hosts its own carnival with a difference later this month.

The village’s raft carnival starts at 1.30pm on Saturday, August 20 in aid of North Devon Hospice and Umberleigh Village Hall.

The floating procession of floats will travel three miles down the River Taw to Umberleigh, where the carnival atmosphere will continue with children’s entertainers, a car boot sale, face painters, stalls, a bar and a tug-o-war competition.

The village’s annual raft race to Barnstaple has not been held for more than 20 years.

Organiser Ivan Huxtable said if the raft carnival was successful, it could become an annual event.

Carnival entrants must be aged 16 or over and must be able to swim. To book a place or for more information, contact Ivan Huxtable on 07779 214909.
