School children rediscover the joys of the bike sheds at Orchard Vale

THE promise of a free breakfast – and the chance to saddle up and do their bit for the planet – proved popular for pupils at a Barnstaple primary school.

More than 200 children, staff and parents at Orchard Vale School enjoyed breakfast by the bikesheds – a Bikers’ Big Breakfast event held at the school to coincide with Devon Car Free Day last month.

Those who came on two wheels were treated to cereals yoghurts, fresh fruit salad, croissants, muffins and orange juice courtesy of the nearby Barum Gate Table Table and Premier Inn. Adults could even choose to reward themselves with a bacon sandwich.

The school’s project coordinator, Dawn Crabb, said: “The breakfast was an enormous success and had a great community feel to it. “The event successfully raised awareness of the advantages and fun of cycling and our bike sheds were overflowing with bikes. We’ve certainly noticed an increase in the amount of pupils choosing to bike to school since the event.

“We are so grateful to Peter Elder and the staff at Barum Gate for the very generous donation of food and supporting us in encouraging children to cycle to school.”
