THOUSANDS of people descended on Barnstaple and Bideford as North Devon saw in the New Year in style on Saturday night.

The party atmosphere was alive and well in both towns as entertainment on the Quay in Bideford, and on the Square in Barnstaple, drew masses of people out to welcome in 2012 with spectacular firework displays.

In Bideford, the fun was broadcast live on the internet to listeners all over the world by North Devon independent radio station, The Voice.

In Barnstaple, revellers enjoyed live music from Nikita Payne, Pete Buffery and Gemma Macleod, as well as party music from DJ James Chapple, who was also the event co-organiser.

James said: “We’d like to thank all our volunteers who gave up their time for free to make sure everyone had a safe and memorable night.

“Also a massive thank-you to the public who braved the weather to enjoy the evening and make the event a total success.”

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said there were no major incidents of disorder but it was a generally busy night primarily linked to alcohol-related violence.

“Custody centres were at or near capacity by 5am with 152 detainees.”
