Petty prepares with the help of Dame Kelly

BISHOPS Tawton athlete Sam Petty is looking forward to an exciting summer on the track in a year full of anticipation for the forthcoming Olympic Games in London.

Sam started 2012 with an Aviva-sponsored ‘On Camp with Kelly’ get-together, benefiting from valuable advice from mentor, double Olympic champion Dame Kelly Holmes.

He was among 22 athletes and some of their coaches who took part in the event at the Tonbridge School Centre.

The athletes took part in a weekend of intensive training, including circuit training, aqua-jogging and Pilates.

Dame Kelly also timetabled in a UK anti-doping workshop and a goal setting session with sport psychologist Dr Anna Waters.

Speaking about his goals for this year, Sam said: “I hope to race well at the British University Championships in the Olympic Stadium in early May, with the goal of winning a medal. That would set me up well to try and gain the qualifying time for the European Championships.”

On Camp with Kelly, supported by Aviva since 2004, is Dame Kelly’s mentoring and education initiative for talented young middle distance athletes. For more information, visit: More than 60 athletes have been involved in the initiative to date.
