Petroc make their national mark

PETROC finished a creditable seventh in the National Schools Netball Championships.

The college was one of 18 under-19s teams playing in the tournament and were representing the South West region after qualifying in the regional rounds in January.

After a slow start, losing their first match to Bancroft’s School 7-17, they re-found their form to beat Baines School, 16-5.

The third game against Roedean was disappointing, going 4-2 up at half-time, but with players losing possession and focus, ending in a 9-9 draw.

Once again the Petroc players pulled themselves together and won their next four games, Wrekin College 13-8, Oakham School 15-6, Woodhouse Grove School 11-4 and Royal Grammar School 18-5.

With the top two teams in each group qualifying for the semi-finals, Petroc needed to win their last group match to take second place! The game against Sharnbrook Upper School was closely contested throughout, with Petroc leading by one goal with just one minute left to play, only for Sharnbrook to snatch three late goals for a 13-11 victory.

But Petroc had proved their capability to play at a national level, scoring 100 goals in eight games and conceding 67.

Team members were: Rebecca Priest (captain), Beth Nancekivell (vice captain), Lizzy Hanner, Amber Manley, Miriam Kimber, Laura Short, Rosie Norton, Levi O’Brien, Charlotte Moore and Steph Batstone.
