One that got away

BARNSTAPLE U16s felt their University of Exeter League play-off game against Topsham was one that got away.

Topsham won the game 10-8, but Barnstaple felt they did enough to have won the game. With better execution – and a bit of luck – they may have done.

The sides traded penalties in the first half with Ben Vellacott putting one over for Barnstaple from wide out. With the majority of the possession and territory, they ought to have been ahead at half time.

Topsham scored a try with 20 minutes to go and, crucially, added the conversion. After that it was all one way, with Barum pushing constantly at the Topsham line. Prop forward Jed Avery went over near the posts, but Barum missed the kick.

Still Barum pressed and with 15 minutes to go they thought they had gone ahead with a try from Vellacott, but it was disallowed. A last push saw them gain a penalty under the posts, but the kick came back off the woodwork.

Barnstaple have a Devon Cup semi-final at home to Devonport Services on April 3.

Barum B lost narrowly to Tiverton and were on the wrong end of a 55-0 score line against Bridgend .

Barum exchanged tries with Tiverton up to half time to turn around at 15-all. Aaron Meredith, Finley Tapp and Sam Smale were their scorers. Tiverton edged ahead in the second half. Isaac Windley brought Barum closer, but Tiverton held out for a 25-20 win.
