JAMES O’Sullivan scored two tries as Bideford won 22-12 at Bude in the Western Counties Division.
Bideford had the elements in the first half and might have wondered if a 17-12 lead was going to be enough.
Bude failed to take advantage when it was their turn to enjoy the conditions – and Bideford made a timely substitution by bringing on Richie Allen at scrum-half.
Allen cajoled an extra 10 per cent out of the forward pack, which made a difference in a tight game.
Bideford wing Sam Olde ran through some weak tackles to score after four minutes with Ollie Wicket adding the conversion then a penalty.
When Bude got into Bideford heartland, scrum-half Steve Yates darted over for Dan Pearce to convert,
Bideford came back with a try ferreted out by prop O’Sullivan from close range, Wickett converted.
Just before the break Bude cut the leeway with a second Yates try after Barry Sobey did the donkey work.
The only score in the second half came three minutes from time when O’Sullivan – now playing at No.8 – collected a push-over try.
ILFRACOMBE were defeated 68-0 when they travelled to Devon Two leaders University of Exeter.
Torrington were 48-5 losers away to Liskeard-Looe in the Cornwall & Devon Division.
Combe host the Old Issians on Boxing Day while Torrie entertain South Molton.
