Hospital staff among those who took part in mass charity skydive
DOZENS of jumpers took to the skies on Saturday to raise money for a new chemotherapy unit for North Devon.
Twenty-five skydivers strapped themselves to instructors and braved the 15,000ft tandem drop at Dunkeswell Airfield near Honiton, raising an estimated 10,000 for the North Devon Chemotherapy Appeal.
Participants included chemotherapy nurses and colleagues from North Devon District Hospital, members of the public, and even a Barnstaple pub-restaurant manager.
On the appeal’s Facebook page, participant Kelly Fry-Sherborne wrote: “Had a fantastic day! Experience of a lifetime! Was nervous at first but it was brilliant and raised money too! What a good day.â€
Ammanda Dennis wrote: “I had the most amazing day; so lovely to meet fellow fundraisers. And the skydive? A moment that will be cherished for the rest of my life – fantastic!â€
Jean Buller, from Barnstaple, wrote: “I had fantastic time doing another tandem sky dive, this time in aid of the Chemptherapy Appeal. Flying through the air, taking in the brilliant views on the way down just took my breath away.
“I look forward to the next time and urge all that have not yet tried a sky dive to have a go because it’s so exhilarating you’ll never forget it and want to do it again and again and again.â€
Appeal fund-raising manager Ian Roome said sponsorship money was still coming in and he hoped to know the final total over the coming weeks.
“I’d like to say an enormous thank-you to all those who embarked on conquering their fears of heights for charity,†said Mr Roome.
“They did our cause a brilliant deed and I hope they are all proud of their achievements.
“Another skydive is planned for October 1 and there are still places available so please get in touch with me if you’d like more information.â€
Northern Devon Healthcare Trust Charitable Fund is raising money to replace the outdated and cramped facilities with a brand new stand-alone chemotherapy unit alongside the main hospital building.
It hopes the 2.2million campaign will make a difference to the lives of nearly 5,000 local cancer patients who use the existing service in Barnstaple every year.
