NORTH Devon's new basketball season began with a tough away fixture at Paignton to face last year's cup winners Torbay Tigers.
After falling behind in the early stages North Devon trailed throughout, but they stayed in close contention before finally losing 53-43.
Tigers raced to an early 4-0 lead before a three-pointer by Gareth Ellis settled North Devon's nerves and with Carl Blair scoring six first quarter points the Tigers held only a narrow 18-15 lead at the end of the first period.
Excellent defence from both sides contributed to a low scoring second quarter which ended with the Tigers 24-19 ahead.
A quick nine points from Adam Gregory cut the deficit to just one point towards the end of the third quarter. Although Tigers scored the final three baskets of the quarter there was still everything to play for heading into the final period. The teams traded baskets in the final quarter before a couple of late three pointers enabled the Tigers them to pull away.
Adam Gregory led the scoring with 17 points and took 'the most valuable player' award. Other North Devon scorers: Carl Blair 10, Rob Wrey 4, Gareth Ellis 3, Steve Evans 3, Bob Ayres 2, Dave Sloman 2, John Vernon 2.
