Talented young middle distance runner Sam Petty from Bishops Tawton took part in an Aviva sponsored On Camp with Kelly training camp with double Olympic champion Dame Kelly Holmes in her home town of Tonbridge.

Supported by Aviva, the camps are Dame Kelly’s mentoring and education initiative for talented young middle distance athletes.

Sam was invited to take part in the camp together with 11 other medallists at the Aviva English Schools Championships.

He said: “It has been a fantastic camp and great to talk to and train with so many other top young athletes. One of the main things I have learned on the camp is how to manage injuries, both mentally and physically. The training session with the young athletes was one of the highlights of the week and I really enjoyed passing on my knowledge and experience to them.”

Dame Kelly said: “I am very pleased to invite Sam to train in my home town and it was great to get to know him better. I believe that it is very important that the athletes I work with give something back to the sport and pass on their knowledge to the next generation as they have done with the young Kent athletes this week.”
