12-year-old Aimee Stanley is planning to raise £1,500 for charity by swimming 5,000 lengths in four months

A keen Barnstaple swimmer is getting back in the water to raise money for a local charity.

Aimee Stanley, 12, swam 22 miles in three months last year, raising £1,400 for Aspire.

And this year, she plans to go one better by completing 44 miles in four months.

"I've not been swimming for a while and I wanted to take up a new challenge," said the year eight Pilton Community College pupil. "So I'm doubling the miles to push myself."

This year, Aimee will be swimming more than 5,000 lengths at the Barnstaple Hotel pool to raise money for Bideford-based Families in Grief, following the deaths of her nan and grandad.

"I just think it's a really nice thing that they do for people, supporting people when they need help," she said.

Aimee is also planning to sell cakes at Tesco in Braunton on Wednesday, October 28, and at Tesco Extra in Barnstaple the following day.

She's aiming to raise upwards of £1,500 and hopes to complete the challenge before Valentine's Day.
