Light Up a Life appeal 2016: This week looks at the dedicated work of the North Devon Hospice nurses caring for people at home
This year’s Light Up a Life appeal – where local people donate to North Devon Hospice or Children’s Hospice South West in memory of a loved one – is well under way.
All donations will help the charities care for those who need it during the festive period. This is particularly true of the Hospice to Home service run by North Devon Hospice, which sees care provided in people’s own homes around the clock and right through Christmas.
Christina Lightburn, from the Hospice to Home team, will be working night shifts on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Eve. She said: “My role is to be there to care for the patient, but it’s just as important that I can give the family respite for some much-needed sleep.
“It feels different doing this job at Christmas time, because families are aware that it may be their last one all together. I was working last Christmas too, and I happened to be assigned to care for someone I knew very well. I was glad to be able to help them enjoy that time together as a family. One of my fondest memories was helping her sit up in bed to watch the New Year’s Eve fireworks out of the window.”
She added: “The team help patients to remain at home, rather than having a potentially distressing admission to hospital.
“Keeping people at home at this time of year feels especially important, because it allows them to be surrounded by their family in a comfortable and familiar environment. I absolutely love what I do, and am grateful to all those who donate to North Devon Hospice to make it all possible. Thank you.”
