WORK is understood to have started on a new JD Wetherspoon's pub, restaurant and hotel in Ilfracombe.

On Monday it appeared work had finally begun on the old Collingwood Hotel building on the seafront, almost 18 months after planning permission was granted and much to the relief of local people who feared what was to become of the derelict site.

The nationwide pub chain has said the new facility would create at least 50 jobs in the town.

Ilfracombe town and district councillor Paul Crabb said: "We are tremendously relived to see work starting on this important landmark building.
