Work has begun on Barnstaples new Asda supermarket. Contractors Simons Group have started on the site for the new store at the Anchorwood Bank development. The work will consist of a 79,000sq ft steel frame structure, with 40,000sq ft of shop floor that will include George, a deli and a cafeteria. A petrol station will also be constructed on the site, as well as a car park for 350 vehicles. Tom Robinson, chief executive of Simons Group, said: We are thrilled to be carrying out this new scheme with Asda, in a great location and with a fantastic team at hand, ready to deliver. Contractors hope to finish the site in six months, with a view to opening the store before the end of the year. The Gazette reported that developers Wessex Investors had handed over to Simons Group in April.
