The rock pool at Westward Ho! is set to reopen this summer after a two year closure.

Work has begun to repair the rock pool at Westward Ho! – two years after it was closed.

The pool was shut in February 2014, after storms breached the concrete surrounding the pool.

Later assessments showed that the pool’s steel reinforcement had been exposed as well.

Repair plans have pushed forward since the appointment of Exeter based consultants BSW and now the pool is expected to open in time for the holiday season.

Westward Ho! Councillor Peter Le Maistre said the commencement of the work was ‘fantastic news’.

He added: “All we need now is some fair weather so we can complete everything on schedule, but I’m really happy with the progress so far.”

Work to take place on the pool will include a new layer of reinforced concrete, as well as new water level controls.

The edges of the pool will also need repainting along with new signage.

The future of the rock pool had looked uncertain following it’s indefinite closure in 2014, when the cost of repair could not be covered by Torridge District Council.

But the chances of the pool reopening were given a boost in January last year thanks to a £417,000 Coastal Communities funding windfall.
