North Devons longest running nightclub will reopen in new hands next week. Tommy Deaves and his partner Jenny Beardshall have taken over The Marisco Club in Woolacombe and are all set to open next Friday (July 22). They take over from Joey Dicker, whose family had been in charge since 1990. Mariscos prides itself on being the longest running nightclub in the UK with the same name and format. Tommy, who currently runs the Social Services Bar in Bideford, is no stranger to the club, having spent time behind the decks at the club in the past. The 37-year-old is keen to keep that tradition alive and says he will hit the ground running. He said: Were keen to reopen with the complete original format - hip-hop on a Thursday, indie and rock on a Friday and more dance music on Saturdays because its tried and tested. Its what the locals want its what the tourists want. You cant have one of those things all the time and what nobody wants is commercial chart music, thats not what Mariscos has ever been about. Tommy and Jenny plan to bring in well-known acts every Thursday and Saturday evening, with John Kelly, Freestylers and Natty Speaks in the pipeline for the summer. They also have loose plans to make use of the club for occasions outside of the summer season. Joey, who announced he would be stepping down from the club in March, said the move felt right. It took us one meeting, we all went up there one afternoon along with my mum, who is obviously a massive part of it all, he said. It all felt right, and we had that feeling in our gut. Ive known Tommy for a few years now. Hes done a few nights for us in the past and hes always gone down well. I just want to wish them well and I hope they have as much success, if not more, than we had running the club.
