Emergency services are working to free an elderly woman from a car after a crash at Westacott Road in Whiddon Valley, Barnstaple, this afternoon (Tuesday).

Police said a vehicle had collided with a bollard at around 3.40pm and was now on its side, with an elderly female driver currently trapped in the vehicle.

Police and fire crews are on scene and the road is currently closed, including at the Rose Lane roundabout by Tesco.

The collision is believed to have occurred near the Barum Gate entrance.

Update 4.50pm: Fire fighters used hydraulic cutters to remove the car to release the casualty, on the advice of paramedics on scene. The woman is now believed to be clear of the car and has been left in the care of South Western Ambulance Service.
