COUNCILLORS will visit a site earmarked for a 28-bedroomed hotel and business centre at Westward Ho! next week.Well Pict European Ltd wants to build the complex on the Duckhaven Equestrian site in Cornborough Road.Torridge District Council has received 87 letters and emails of objection and four representations in support. Abbotsham Parish Council and Northam Town Council are backing the scheme.Objections include the claim that it would be unsustainable development in open countryside and that it would have an adverse visual impact on the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Coastal Preservation area.Highlights of the proposed scheme include a two-storey, crescent-shaped building housing a restaurant, lounge bar, library, business centre, holistic beauty spa, a catering school and hotel. There would also be a walled kitchen garden, herb garden, wildlife sanctuary, new lake, bird hide, marine outlook and new public footpaths. An officers' report to next Thursday's plans committee recommends approval."The application is contrary to planning policy," it states. "However, the economic benefits and regeneration entailed are considered to outweigh the fact that the application site is outside the development boundary.
