TORRIDGE councillors have thrown out plans for a new hotel at Westward Ho! for a second time, despite a plea from famous chef John Burton Race.Officers had recommended approval for the multi-million scheme which, they said, would bring economic and regeneration benefits which outweighed policy objections. But the plans committee yesterday (Thursday) again threw out the outline application to build the five-star hotel on the Duckhaven Equestrian site. They said it was outside the development boundary of the resort and in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The hotel project is part of an ambitious regeneration plan for Westward Ho! by local businessmen Alan Smith and Martin Seymour. They also want to re-develop the former Buccaneer pub and ice rink site to include two restaurants, one headed by a celebrity chef. The hotel plan includes provision for a cookery school.John Burton Race spoke to the committee via a video link. He said the hotel would benefit everyone. The applicants lodged an appeal after the first refusal and this has yet to be determined.
