A Northam family have organised a fun run in memory of a beloved daughter and sister who lost her life to epilepsy a year ago. Lisa Pilkington died a week after her 27th birthday in October last year and her dad Adrian Roach and step mum Gemma Hudson have organised the fun run and walk at Westward Ho! for her birthday on Sunday, October 8. They want to raise as much money as possible for the Epilepsy Action charity but also raise awareness of a little talked-about condition. Gemma said many people knew very little about epilepsy and didnt appreciate that it could kill. Lisa suffered from other medical conditions as well as epilepsy and lived at a care home in Bideford but was a huge part of Adrian and Gemmas lives and a loving sister to their son Alfie, now five. Adrian said: We just want to raise awareness and for everyone to see what we are doing. Everyone knows cancer and the lifeboats and other charities, but this is a killer and people under-estimate it. Lisa suffered fits on a weekly basis and she would go into hospital when she had a bad fit, but this time it was one she didnt recover from. The 5k Fun Run for Lisa starts at The Village Inn, Westward Ho! and people must be there for 10am, with as many as possible invited and walkers welcome as well as runners. A raffle with prizes donated by local businesses will be held on the day. Gemma worked at the pub until recently and said landlord John was the main sponsor, so with his help and other generous local businesses they can ensure every £5 entry fee goes to charity, though people are also welcome to raise sponsorship. Through fundraising at the pub the couple have already raised around £800 and they hope to raise at least £1,000. You can make a donation at www.justgiving.com/fundraising/gemma-hudson2 any time or register to enter the fun run by donating your £5 entrance fee by October 1.
