THE Shopmobility Centre in Barnstaple can now offer mobility scooters to take home at weekends or to hire for the week in addition to the daily service for shoppers.

This has been made possible thanks to 2,500 funding by local councillors Brian Greenslade and Chris Haywood through the Devon County Council locality fund.

Manager Sharon Lynch said: "We currently provide the service Monday to Friday, but have found many clients are excluded from using the service as they are unable to get into Barnstaple during the week and have requested a service for weekends."

But, with the new funding, the centre is now able to offer portable scooters that can be easily taken apart into manageable pieces for transport in a car boot.

These can be hired and taken away for weekend use and are also already drawing interest from visitors, who can hire by the week while staying in the area.

Mr Greenslade said: "It is important to allow people who could otherwise be largely housebound to enjoy the shops. It is a benefit to individuals and the town."
