A national pub chain has finally succeeded in its bid to revamp the prominent Collingwood Hotel on Ilfracombe seafront.JD Weatherspoon PLC is set to begin work as soon as possible to breath new life into the building as a hotel, pub and restaurant after planners gave the go ahead yesterday (Wednesday October 8.)The Gazette reported last week how the company intended to offer the planning committee meeting of North Devon Council a "take it or leave it" option after being unable to reach agreement on its original proposal to include 23 apartments on the site.By yesterday the original scheme had been dropped and all housing elements withdrawn, with the intent simply to refurbish the building as a hotel with public bar, which the committee agreed to.
