TORRIDGE District Council has announced that refuse and recycling collections for today (Wednesday) have been suspended due to the severity of the present weather.

Additional resources will be arranged in readiness for double collections next week to clear any backlog that may be created as a result of this week's service disruption.

Holsworthy area office is closed for the day.

A council statement said: "While the council accepts that any disruption to service provision will cause problems, it has to balance the benefits of removing the waste against the risk of causing damage or harm to both our own employees and our customers/vehicles etc. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank the public for their continued patience and understanding. We will continue to monitor the situation and further updates will be available on our website and through the local media.
