A weather warning for snow and ice is in place this morning (Friday) after temperatures dropped last night. Snow and hail showers can be expected inland with rain in coastal areas. Up to 1-3cm of snow are possible, according to the Met Office, with ice likely on untreated surfaces. A chief forecaster for the Met Office said: The warning has been extended further east over the Midlands and into parts of northwest England where showers continue to move well inland from the Irish Sea. A cold, unstable northwesterly airstream covers the UK, bringing a wintry mix of showers. Amounts of snow towards the south and east of the warning area are uncertain and many places will see very little, but ice will be a likely hazard in any case.Challenges on the roadsSome of North Devons roads have experienced snow, including on the A388 from Milton Damerel to Frithelstock Stone.Devon County Councils gritters are currently treating its primary and secondary salting network, covering more than 2,000 miles of Devons roads. The A3124 from Winkleigh to North Tawton was also closed earlier today due to a collision. Icy roads have also been reported on the A3072 and A3079 around Holsworthy. Councillor Stuart Hughes, Devon County Council Cabinet Member for Highway Management, said: Gritters have been out continuously since returning from a pre-planned treatment in the early hours of this morning, having reloaded and fitted ploughs to deal with any significant snow they may come across. Snow is affecting higher ground, particularly on Dartmoor, and we are continuing to respond to that. In other parts of the county, showers throughout the early morning have created difficult conditions on much of the countys highway network. I would urge everyone to take extra care wherever they are travelling today and remember that ice can form even on treated roads. The weather warning is set to last until 11am, with a severe cold weather alert also in place this weekend.Have you seen snow in North Devon or Exmoor? Tweet your photos using #WeAreNorthDevon.
