Lance Corporal David Gayler (left) from Barnstaple is serving with The 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards based in Camp Souter, Kabul. The former Pilton Community College pupil, who left school in May 1992, is now a trained rifleman and has been serving with the battalion for almost six years. This is David's second operational tour having served in Iraq in 2005 and he commented: "I was unsure how the locals would receive us, but so far the local population has been very friendly. They are clearly very supportive of our efforts." Lance Corporal David Gayler's mother and family also come from North Devon, but he has his wife Susan and two children, Owen and Danny, living with him in Windsor."My family realise that Afghanistan can be dangerous place, but we are helping the Afghan locals and we are making a difference. They are therefore very supportive of what I do."The 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards deployed to Afghanistan in October and will return in April."I can't believe I am actually in Kabul," said David."It's great to finally be doing what we've trained for. It's hard at times being far away from home but the experience is definitely worth it.
