A BARNSTAPLE furniture store flooded by a burst water main is reassuring customers that business will be back to normal very soon.Staff at the Furniture Warehouse in Eastern Avenue were shocked to discover water pouring into the store last Wednesday morning. Within half-an-hour, manager Martin Fitzgerald said a "torrent" of water had found its way to the front of the store, causing water damage to stock including three-piece suites, dining display cabinets, and beds, with a retail value of between £45,000 and £50,000."I was standing talking to a customer and looked down to see the water forming under my feet," Mr Fitzgerald told the Gazette."I looked out the back and it was like Niagara Falls out there."Mr Fitzgerald said that South West Water sent a representative around straight away and a clean-up crew helped clear the water that evening.Laminate flooring has been removed from large areas of the store and furniture moved into the centre of the building while the clean-up continues."It's just one of those things that happens and we are dealing with it," Mr Fitzgerald said."Although we are trading at a limited capacity at the moment, the wheels are in motion and the shop floor should be back to normal very soon."A spokesperson for South West Water confirmed that an inspector visited the site at 11.30am and arranged for affected properties to receive an alternative supply until water was restored at 2pm."We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused to businesses and residents in the area," said the spokesperson.
