World War two aeroplanes will be landing on Saunton Beach this Saturday as part of a two day event to mark the anniversary of D-Day. On Friday and Saturday the beach will be packed with wartime vehicles and re-enactors from living history groups. It is organised by Friends of the Assault Training Center in conjunction with Saunton Beach Enterprises and Saunton Sands Hotel. Friday is an education day for local schoolchildren from 10am, though the public is welcome too. On Saturday there will be several wartime planes landing on the beach, as well as displays of vehicles, a convoy along the beach and a re-enacted assault on a pillbox, complete with pyrotechnics. In the run up to D-Day, Saunton and nearby Braunton Burrows became the Assault Training Center where American soldiers practised for the invasion of Europe.
