Scammers calling people from the charity’s number and asking for bank details, police warn.
Police are warning of a group of scammers who have ‘hijacked’ the Crimestoppers phone number.
The fraudsters are calling people from the charity’s number - 0800 555111 - and saying their are ‘Crimestoppers at the Home Office’.
The caller then directs them to the website to clarify the number, before asking for personal information such as bank details.
Police are warning people that Crimestoppers would never make cold calls to the public asking for personal details.
Roger Critchell, director of operations for Crimestoppers, is currently talking to the phone service provider to attempt to resolve the situation and hope this can be rectified as quickly as possible.
He said: “People can still call the 0800 555 111 to pass on anonymous information about crime, but we wanted to make sure people are aware that Crimestoppers will never, ever contact members of the public asking for personal details.
“Please do not hand offer any personal information from cold callers claiming to be Crimestoppers.”
Anyone contacted is asked to report it to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.
