Hundreds of people will be walking through the night in Barnstaple tonight in support of a major 24-hour fundraiser for Cancer Research UK. Nearly 600 are taking part in this years Relay for Life at the rugby club 34 teams taking it in turns to complete circuits of the pitch between 12noon today (Saturday) and 12noon tomorrow. The day started with a survivors lap completed by 41 former cancer patients who have registered to take part. There is live music planned throughout the night, as well as a disco and candle of hope ceremony. The event will finish tomorrow with final lap completed by all participants. Fundraising has already eclipsed last years total of £17,000 organiser Lisa Mackenzie said more than £30,000 had already been raised this year. She thanked people taking part: Sadly, cancer has affected many of us and the stories I have had the privilege to hear are heart-warming, devastating and humbling. I truly believe that we can beat cancer; all the dedication and hard work that has been put into fundraising is nothing short of inspiring.
