Alternate route created to ensure people of all abilities can take part in the big North Devon District Hospital fundraiser in Barnstaple on June 22.

AN extra alternative route has been devised for the charity Walk for Wards event in Barnstaple on Sunday, June 22.

The Hospital Charity has teamed up with Go North Devon to enable people with limited mobility to take part in the historical trail and raise money for their local health service.

People can join the 3.5 mile walks from Barnstaple Square led by town crier Tom Evans and are asked to raise a minimum of £15 sponsorship.

They can nominate the hospital ward or department of their choice and of course are welcome to choose the Chemotherapy Appeal if they wish.

Go North Devon client Paul Wilkes assessed the alternative route in his powered wheelchair accompanied by board Member David Netherway and said: “We have only made two small detours to the map of the main walk which means friends and families can still walk the majority of the route together.

“I am looking forward to taking part and finding out about some historical discoveries along the central parish ward of Barnstaple boundary.”

Go North Devon is offering discounted hire for anyone taking part in the event who may need to hire a manual wheelchair or portable scooter to access the route.

Those with limited mobility or who may be bringing pushchairs can request a map to assess the walk in advance. To register for Walk for Wards go to www.northdevonhealth.nhs.uk/fundraising or call the fundraising team on 01271 311772.
