Bideford Hospital Friends joined forced with Tesco staff and volunteers to give town’s hospital garden a makeover.

Bideford Hospital has had its community garden spruced up with a helping hand from the community.

The garden was overgrown with old and broken furniture, when Bideford Tesco community champion Sallie McKay-Roper first saw it.

She said: "There were only three of the Bideford Hospital Friends volunteers who were in their seventies trying to dig it up.

"They asked if we could donate some plants but I got the whole team down here to do the work too."

Store staff joined forces with BJs Value House, Cornwall Farmers and Farm and Country Stores to donate plants and furniture.

Betty Chapman, of the Bideford Hospital Friends, said: "It hasn't been used in the past; it was really quite terrible.

"But now patients sit out here and nurses use it for lunch. It's lovely."
