SECOND World War veterans gathered at the war memorial in Rock Park, Barnstaple, on Friday to mark VJ Day.The brief and poignant service, conducted by Vicar of Swimbridge, the Reverend Prebendary Peter Bowers, was attended by a number of Burma Star veterans, including Alf Turner, who celebrated his 89th birthday on the same day. Alf, from Barnstaple, who served in the Sixth and First Devons, attended with his wife Phyllis, whom he married in 1942, before being posted to India and Burma."I wrote lots of letter to Phyllis and numbered every one so she'd know if they all got through - quite a lot didn't," he said.Despite having to close the North Devon branch of the Burma Star Association in August 2006, veterans still meet regularly. For more information, telephone the welfare officer on (01271) 830808.
