AN energetic bid to get Combe Martin healthier than ever before kicked off on Monday as the whole village primary school joined an enthusiastic aerobics session. For the month of June, the Healthy Village Event will see dozens of activities and awareness events throughout the village to encourage all ages to work on their health.Transform, the Neighbourhood management programme, is working with the school, Devon Primary Care Trust and North Devon Volunteer Centre to host activities including: a Dawn Chorus walk on Friday, 6-8.30am, followed by a swim and breakfast; and on Saturday a water sports morning at the beach for over 50s from 11am. Other events include Tai Chi on the beach, dancing, after school football, sunset walks, cricket session and more for all age groups.Transform deputy manager Rory McDonald explained there was a serious side as people in rural areas had more trouble accessing health services.Informative events will be taking place at various village locations, offering advice and information on everything from smoking to healthy eating. The school has enthusiastically joined the project and on Monday every child - and member of staff - received a pedometer (or step counter) to help them measure how many steps they take in a day and to work on improving over the month. Each morning this week the children will be testing their own fitness; next week they will take part in Walk to School Week and attempt to set a record in the process.More information can be found in events diaries at many village outlets or by calling (01271) 867131.
