BAD weather dealt a body blow to Braunton's annual village fair on Monday, but those who turned out found fun a'plenty on the Recreation Field. The main marquee could not be erected because of the weather, a performance stage for live bands was shredded by the wind, gazebos took off and so did some of the expected stallholders. But smiling clowns - the theme of the fair's fancy dress competition - lively live bands, skilful young football teams, a sheepdog working ducks and the hardier stalls and sideshows kept visitors entertained, although their numbers were well down. The finals of children's knockout soccer competitions saw Barnstaple Youth beat Braunton in the under-10s final and Braunton beat Bideford Blues in the under-nines.An art exhibition for local schools attracted an entry of 346 exhibits, with Georgeham School taking the overall award.Roy Barnes of the Braunton Rotary Club organisers said everyone had made the best of a bad job. All the comments from visitors were favourable and the stallholders who stayed reported doing quite well.Main beneficiary of this year's fair will by the North Devon Hospice, with smaller amounts to other local charities.
