Shebbear students embrace ‘Roman day’

Youngsters at Shebbear College got to enjoy a ‘Roman day’ as part of this year’s history coursework.

Pupils from Years four and five, along with their teachers, dressed up for the occasion and got into role as a tribe of ancient Britons gathering in their fortress to decide what to do faced with the prospect of imminent Roman invasion.

And in the afternoon they were given the chance to reverse their roles, this time becoming part of the Roman army. The students were expertly trained in the art of warfare by a visiting Roman Legionary in full battle dress.

The day ended with this newly trained Roman Legion confronting a ‘rowdy mob’ of ancient Britons made up of pupils from Years one, two and three, along with some parents and staff. Soft balls replaced spears, but the taunting and shouting were very much real.
