A Barnstaple World War Two veteran was given a splendid send-off with a fly past from a Hercules transport plane today (Monday).

The aircraft from RAF Brize Norton arrived at North Devon Crematorium at the same time as the cortege of former Mosquito navigator Leslie Francis.

Mr Francis, who was 97, served with 47 Squadron in Burma where it carried out ground attacks and reconnaissance of Japanese forces.

Today 47 Squadron is responsible for the Hercules transport aircraft and refuelling planes, but the family of Mr Francis were delighted when the squadron agreed to carry out the fly past.

An RAF officer was present at the funeral, which was also attended by Barnstaple Royal British Legion and dozens of family and friends.

The grand daughter of Mr Francis, Lucy Silous, officiated at the funeral and it was organised by undertaker Co-operative Funeral Care in Barnstaple.
