Watch the moment jewellery shop owner David Bruce fought off a would-be armed robbery in Barnstaple with a baseball bat.

Police have released CCTV footage showing the moment a masked raider attempted to rob a Barnstaple jewellery shop.

The footage shows the man in a latex head mask enter Coopers Jewellery in Barnstaple High Street on May 28.

He places a bag on the counter, before pulling out a gun,

But in dramatic scenes, owner David Bruce fights back with a baseball bat, chasing the man from the shop.

Senior Investigating Officer Detective Inspector Praveen Naidoo said: “This type of offence is not a frequent occurrence in Barnstaple and no one was injured. The shots fired are believed to be blanks.”

“This occurred in a busy part of town and we are appealing to the public for witnesses and for information as to the identity of the offender.

“Any member of the public who may have information as to the identity of the offender is asked to contact police.

“We are particularly keen to speak to anyone who may have seen the man entering or leaving the town centre area prior to putting his mask on.”

The offender is described as a white man, approximately 5 foot 7 in height wearing a sandy or khaki coloured trench coat and was wearing a latex type full head mask, which gave the perception of him being bald.

DI Naidoo added: “The offender may well have received an injury to their shoulder or head and arm as a result.

“We have forensic evidence at the scene that is likely to belong to the offender and are following several lines of enquiry. “We’d like to hear from any member of the public who may have information as to the identity of the offender. With the forensic evidence we have available to us it would be quite straight forward to confirm or eliminate someone from our enquiry”
