Our reporter Matt Smart took on the gargantuan new Smokehouse Challenge at the Custom House - find out how he got on...

A Barnstaple restaurant has launched a brand new eating challenge - which weighs a wopping seven pounds.

The Custom House waves goodbye to its popular Totem Burger challenge this week, in favour of the ginormous new Smokehouse Challenge.

It challenges participants to devour three plates of pulled pork, beef brisket, fries, a burger, nachos and all the sides in under 30 minutes in return for a free pudding and a place on the wall of fame.

Owner Matt Spencer said: “We had the Totem Burger challenge running for four years and around 400 people tried it.

“Only 23 managed to complete it and only 12-13 people within the half hour time limit.

When we had Randy Santel come down, we thought that would be a good way to finish it off.”

Matt said the smokehouse menu had been really popular, so basing the next eating challenge on it was a natural progression.

He added: “I don’t even know how many calories are in it - it weighs 3.3kg.

“No one has completed it yet.”
