VANDALS have struck at a Torrington pre-school group for the fourth time in a year.Play leader Chantelle Oversby arrived at the pre-school at the Eric Palmer Centre at Barley Grove last week to find the side of a shed used to store play equipment had been pulled off and the wood used to make a fire in the children's play area.Children's toys and bikes were missing - one being thrown on to the fire - and tarmac on the play area was cracked by the heat. There was glass from broken bottles scattered around.Mrs Oversby, who has worked at the pre-school for nearly 25 years, said: " This is the third time we have had this in six months and the fourth time in a year. Last time the Bideford Lions gave us a donation and local groups are doing things for us. We plan to buy a metal shed for the future and some new bikes."People have been very helpful, but this is so disheartening. "Those responsible must have been here for some time and I don't understand how no one saw or smelled anything. On previous occasions the police have said they would keep an eye on us and they did so for a while. But they cannot be here all the time. I would ask everyone to keep an eye out and to report anything they see."If only those responsible realised what they were doing, spoiling the fun of young children, she said. "There must be better things for them to do than play with children's toys and destroy their fun. They may have even attended here themselves when they were young!
